10-year old boy dies from Lassa fever in Ebonyi

A 10 year old boy in Igbeagu in Izzi Local Government Area of the State weekend lost his life to Lassa fever.

His death is the second confirmed case recorded in the state since the recent outbreak across the country.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike confirmed the death of the deceased.

He said the victim died after he was discharged from Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA.

The Commissioner described the incident as unfortunate adding that the deceased was a day student of one of the primary schools in the state.

Govt has no plans to hand over NIPOST to foreign firms —Minister

The Minister of Communications, Barrister Adebayo Shittu, yesterday disclosed that the Federal Government has no plan whatsoever to either privatize Nigerian Poster Service, NIPOST, nor hand it over its operations to foreigners.
With this , the Minister has dismissed as untrue insinuations that the government had concluded arrangements to allow foreign managers operate NIPOST and reposition it for profitability.
The Minister in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Victor Oluwadamilare described the rumour making round as misleading, but assured that the government was committed to turning the fortunes of NIPOST around for profitability.

Blame Fayose’s recklessness for UBEC’s sanction- Fayemi’s aide

The Minister of Solid minerals Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has  said that Governor Ayo Fayose’s reckless utterances and primitive approach to governance should be blamed for the UBEC’s sanction.
Special Assistant on Media to the minister, Yinka Oyebode in a statement made available to journalists said it is  unfortunate that the Ayo Fayose administration would, in its characteristic infantile and crude manner, falsify discussions that took place on the floor of the National Assembly, all in the bid to justify its ineptitude.
According to him, when the UBEC Deputy Executive Secretary, Dr Yakubu Ganbo , was  at the senate, he did not accuse the immediate past administration led by Dr Kayode Fayemi of misappropriation of UBEC fund.

Blame saboteurs in NNPC for fuel scarcity - Kashamu

Senator Buruji Kashamu, a member of the National Assembly representing Ogun East Senatorial District, has linked  the current artificial fuel scarcity in the country to activities of saboteurs and  corrupt practices within Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
Kashamu stated this  in Ijebu-Igbo during a meeting/empowerment programme for the members of the Omo Ilu Foundation and PDP loyalists from the three senatorial districts of Ogun State, where cars, buses and motorcycles were distributed to various beneficiaries.
He said that from the investigations  conducted among some independent marketers,it was  discovered  that some managers at the depots sell Premium Motor Spirit popularly known as petrol to independent marketers at the official rate of N77, while they ask them to pay between N30 and N35 into special private accounts. This, has made it difficult for the retailers to sell the product to consumers at the official pump price of N86.50k.

Rivers Government will continue to promote the rule of law---Wike

Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers state has  stated that his administration  will  continue  to  promote  the  rule of law in order to enhance the security  of  the  state.
Speaking  during  the  ground breaking ceremony  for the construction  of  the  new Nigerian Bar Association, NBA,  Port Harcourt  branch on Monday,  Governor Wike  said  his administration  has taken proactive  steps to encourage  the  bar and bench  to promote  the  rule of law. 
He said that the Rivers State Government resolved to construct  a new Law Centre for the NBA because  of its commitment  to  enhancing   law practice  in the state with befitting facilities.
Governor Wike said: "We had to relocate  the law center to create room for  the construction  of  more courts in the High Court Complex. We also relocated the law complex for the purpose  of  providing  befitting  facilities  for  lawyers to practice  in the state".
The governor also  formally  handed over the certificate  of  occupancy of the premises  to the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA.

Abducted Ese Oruru to be repatriated back to Bayelsa

The Sharia Commission in Kano has been ordered to liaise with office of the Deputy Inspector General of police, zone 1 to commence process of repatriating the 14 years old teenager, Ese Oruru, allegedly abducted by one Yunusa of Kura local government area of Kano state.
The emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, Monday gave the order in his first official reaction, while he distanced himself and the Kano emirate council from the purported abduction of Ese Oruru by suspected lover.
According to Sanusi, "I have ordered the sharia commission to liaise with the office of Deputy Inspector General of police zone to repatriate and reconcile the teenager with her family immediately"
The teenager was reportedly abducted in Opolo, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, by one Yunusa an indigene of Kura local government area of Kano in August, 2015.

Buhari, showing enough political will in governance – Ndoma-Egba

President Muhammadu Buhari has so far shown enough political will in the process of governance to bring about the change promised the Nigerian people, former Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, SAN, has observed.
The ex-leader of the Senate made the observation in Abuja while speaking on the recent occasion where he was formally received into the All Progressives Congress (APC) by members of the National Working Committee of the party in Calabar.

TUC backs project harmony for early resolution of conflicts

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has thrown its weight behind the Harmony Project designed to promote early and harmonious resolution of conflicts in season of resource scarcity and new regulations.

The Project, being facilitated by Ethics Resource Centre and National Commission for Colleges of Education with the support of critical stakeholders, has three components. The first component is the research and development of new leadership, management, negotiation, arbitration, bargaining, and mediation blueprints for addressing emerging conflict situations occasioned by current realities of socioeconomic changes, resource scarcity and new regulations.
The second component is the organization of a National Consultative Conference of stakeholders scheduled to hold from 22nd to 24th March, 2016 at the NCCE auditorium, Abuja to brainstorm on the new blueprint.

The third component is the inauguration of Harmony Action Committees in Institutions and Workplaces. The Committee, made up of representatives of cross sections of critical stakeholders, is charged with responsibility of early intervention in conflict situations with a view to preventing escalation of small conflicts into major industrial crises.
Participants to the consultative conference will from inaugural members of Harmony Committees in their workplaces and institutions.

Project harmony will help employers and employees to understand the nature of contemporary political and socio-economic changes, resource scarcity and attendant tendencies for conflict escalation; as well as understand how to apply new blueprints for prevention and early resolution of conflicts.

The Project will prevent disruptive industrial actions at a time when collaboration of all stakeholders is needed to wade through difficult economic times. More importantly, the project will prevent disruption of academic calendars usually due to strike actions in educational institutions.

The TUC in its endorsement letter of November 26, 2016 re-affirmed “the full support and endorsement of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria for Project Harmony designed to promote sustained industrial peace through harmonious resolution of conflicts”. The TUC also confirmed that officers of the Congress will continue to participate in the implementation of Harmony Project and that the President of the Congress, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama, will deliver the Keynote address at the National Consultative Conference that starts on 22 march.

Wike/PDP’s victory celebration shameful —Rivers APC

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed sadness over Saturday’s Victory Celebration by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State, describing it as shameful and insensitive. “The so called Victory Celebration held two days ago, February 27, 2016, at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekahia, Port Harcourt, was nothing but the celebration of PDP’s bloody victory obtained through massive rigging and the shedding of the blood of over 100 APC members murdered by PDP agents to usher in the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike. The celebration is shameful, callous and insensitive to the injured feelings of families still grieving for their loved ones needlessly killed by PDP agents during the campaigns and the April 11, 2015 gubernatorial elections,” Rivers APC said in a statement issued on Monday in Port Harcourt by the Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.

Vandalization of gas installations, kidnapping, killings in Nigeria scare foreign investors--Buhari

Deliberate explosions, kidnapping and killings in the country were the principal reasons why foreign investors get scared from coming to the country, according to President Muhammadu Buhari who spoke during at a town hall meeting with members of the Nigerian community in Doha, Qatar .
He therefore charged Nigerians to be good ambassadors of their country.

"We have abundant natural and human resources in the country, including huge oil and gas deposit.

"But the challenge is securing those installations and to persuade some of our countrymen to be more patriotic and stop sabotaging the installations.

Saraki under fire to return vehicles worth N300m

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki may be passing through yet another ordeal, this time, over the purchase of new exotic cars for his official use.  The armored vehicles which were said to have cost N329, 515,625‎, were purchased for Senate President Saraki by  management of the National Assembly.
It was gathered that the procurement process for the purchase of vehicles for the Senate president was concluded since December 2015‎ and the tenders board agreed that the purchases be made in batches due to lack of funds.
The N300m worth of vehicles as gathered were not part of the N4 billion budgeted for the purchase of vehicles for National Assembly members.

Ogoni ethnic community accuses Magnus Abe of instigating Army return to Ogoni , as 17 persons were confirmed killed in Yeghe

The Ogoni ethnic nationality has accused Magnus Abe of instigating army return to Ogoni again.
A statement released by the group claimed that residents of Yeghe community in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State and other communities in Khana and Tai Local Government Areas respectively who fled their homes for safety following the killing of over 17 innocent persons by men of the Nigerian Army , drafted to the area by Magnus Abe and Barry Mpigi and who were back home based on assurances given to them by the Governor, Barr Nyesom Wike, when he visited the area have again fled their communities following rumour that the Nigerian military was coming to the area for mass arrest.
It should be recalled that last week, troops of fully armed soldiers had invaded Yeghe community and shut and killed over 17 persons while combing for the ex-Niger Delta agitator, Chief Solomon Ndigbara.

Alleged N676m job scam: Moro to remain in prison custody

Former Minister of Interior,  Abba Moro will remain in Prison custody for alleged complicity in a N676million job scam.
Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Federal High Court in Abuja gave the orders Monday after the former Interior Minister, Abba Moro was remanded at Kuje prison after he pleaded not guilty to an 11-count criminal charge that was preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

FG to partner with creative industry to fight piracy, unveils funding plan for Arts

The Federal Government has said it will work with relevant bodies to fight the piracy of intellectual property in the country, while saying the establishment of a National Endowment for the Arts will bridge the funding gap in the sector.

The Minister of Information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, gave the assurance in Lagos on Sunday, at his maiden Roundtable with stakeholders in the movie industry, tagged ''Redefining The Nollywood Strategy.''

While enumerating the negative effects of piracy, which he said has become ''a monstrous disincentive to the creative industry,'' the Minister noted that the government is committed to battling piracy, as exemplified by the President's directive to the relevant agencies to reduce the menace to the barest minimum.

FG to hold National Summit on Culture, Tourism

The Federal Ministry of Information and Culture will hold a National Summit on Culture and Tourism next month in an effort to make the Culture and Tourism Sector a major revenue earner for the country.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Ahaji Lai Mohammed, announced the plan to host the summit on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, in his office in Lagos.
He said the summit, to be held in Abuja April 11th and 12th, would bring all stakeholders together to examine and proffer solutions to the problems mitigating against culture and tourism being huge revenue earners for the country.
''The summit will signpost our determination to put culture and tourism at the very centre of the Federal Government's ongoing efforts to diversify the economy away from oil,'' Alhaji Mohammed said.

FG rejects crash in oil prices crash at OPEC

Nigeria's federal Government has rejected the crash in oil price telling the member states of Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC at the meeting in Doha  on Sunday that the continued crashing of oil prices prices was longer acceptable.
Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari who was present at the meeting called on all other stakeholders in the sector especially the oil producing nations to articulate ways of rising up to the challenges as the development has seriously affected the economy of many nations.
Nigeria is a member of OPEC and currently running a mono-economy based on oil exports. But its economy is at its ebb due to the oil price.

Troops records tremendous success in clearance operations

Troops of 7 Division Garrison, 112 Battalion and Army Headquarters Strike Group have recorded tremendous success in a clearance operations against Boko Haram terrorists at Kotokuma, Dikwa Local Government Area. The troops cleared the terrorists camp which was equipped with medical facility, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) factory, fuel dump, mechanical workshop, generators and several water points.

The gallant troops also destroyed 3 vehicles laden with IEDs meant for suicide bombings somewhere and killed 37 Boko Haram terrorists. 

Nigerian army inducts combat motorbike battalion into battle

In its strategy to meet up with clearing the remnants of Boko Haram terrorists, the Nigerian Army Tuesday inducted a combat motorbike battalion at the Headquarters of 25 Task Force Brigade, Damboa, Borno State.  

The Nigerian Army also launched the second set of 100 wanted suspected Boko Haram terrorists at the occasion. 

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai while inducting the unit stated that the essence of the battalion is to open and secure motorways from various towns to and fro Maiduguri and other parts of Yobe State. 

University says Nollywood is grossly underutilized as foreign exchange earner

A University don has attributed the persistent economic quagmire in the country to the failure of successive governments to develop and utilize the diversity of opportunities available in the abundant businesses in the country.
Speaking at a forum in Ado Ekiti, a professor of Development Economics and Director of Entrepreneurship Study Centre of the Ekiti State University, Professor Ariyo Awe stressed that contrary to the general belief that Nigeria runs a monolithic economy which needed to be diversified in order to overcome the current economic downturn, the
economy was already substantially  diversified but  only needed the government and people of the country to take advantage of the variety of opportunities available in the economy to battle the seemingly unending recession.

N2.3bn Scam: Three new witnesses testify against Akpobolokemi

Three new witnesses were Thursday presented by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against a former Director- General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Patrick Akpobolokemi. 
Akpobolokemi, alongside five others, are standing trial before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos in a N2.3billion money laundering charge preferred against them by the EFCC.
At the resumed hearing of the matter on Thursday, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo led three witnesses Yahaya Mohammed Yusuf and Wakili Dauda,( both bureau de change operators)  and Olamide Ogunsanya , an Assistant Director with NIMASA, in evidence.
Yusuf ho s the 7th prosecution witness told the court how he received the sum of Two Hundred and Thirty Million, Nine Hundred and Twenty Six Thousand Naira (N230,926,000) from Extreme Vertex Nigeria Limited through an account: Kofar Fada Nigeria Limited, owned by his brother.
Extreme Vertex Nigeria Limited is one of the companies alleged to have benefited from the disbursement of over Two Billion Naira from the Committee on International Shipping and Port Security( ISPS)  in NIMASA.

Alleged N400m fraud: Metuh knows fate March 9

Justice E.O Abang of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on  Thursday February 25, 2016 reserved ruling on a “no case submission” brought by the embattled spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, 
PDP, Olisa Metuh on the money laundering charge preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Metuh is standing trial for allegedly receiving the sum of N400million (four hundred million naira) from former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) who is being tried for laundering $2.1 billion. 

Woman bags 2 months for falsely labelling businessman kidnapper

A middle-aged lady, Ms Chiamaka Izuegbunam has been sentenced to two months imprisonment with an option of N20,000 for falsely labelling an Nnewi-based businessman, Mr. Bethran Onwunzo a kidnapper.
Earlier, her mother, a primary school teacher, Mrs Agnes Izuegbunam was sentenced to six months imprisonment without an option of fine for being found guilty of the same offence and she had accordingly served out the jail term.
Presiding Magistrate of Nnewi Magistrate Court 3, Nnewi Magisterial District of Anambra state, Her Worship, Mrs O.N. Erinne who pronounced Chiamaka guilty of the two counts charge of "conspiracy and giving false information to the police" against Mr. Onwunzo, however acquitted her father, Mr. Bennet Izuegbunam, a security guard attached to the Magistrate Court who was also standing trial before the court with her daughter, Chiamaka for the same offence.

Why Jonathan's ex-ADC is still in detention---EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Thursday, told an Abuja High Court sitting at Jabi why it has not released the former Aide de Camp to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Col. Ojogbane Adegbe, from detention.

In a counter-affidavit it filed before the court, the commission insisted that the continued detention of Adegbe was at the instance of the Nigerian Army.

The commission also refuted claim that it summoned Adegbe from the United Kingdom where he was attending a military course after quitting as the President’s ADC when Jonathan left office on May 29, 2015.

Aviation Fuel scarcity stalls Aero Contractors Airlines, passengers stranded at Lagos airport

Aero Contractors Airline inability to buy aviation fuel Thursday left hundreds of passengers stranded at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Domestic Terminal (MMA2), Lagos.
The airline could not ferry it's passengers to their various destinations because of the airline’s indebtedness to suppliers of JET A1 .
The problem which started in the morning persisted till around 2:00pm when the passengers who could no longer take the excuses of the airline became restive.

Magu reassures Lawyers

Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has reassured lawyers and judges that comments attributed to him in recent media reports regarding the conduct of judicial officials, was not intended at impugning their integrity.
According to him, his comments, and activities of the Commission, should not be interpreted to mean a blanket indictment of all lawyers and judges but, rather directed at a few bad eggs within the system.  “There is no way one can make a blanket statement on the integrity of lawyers and judges. Nigeria is blessed with some of the best lawyers and judges on the African continent. My worry is that the bad ones amongst them are giving the good ones a bad name”, he said.

Woman cries out to IGP as husband disappears under police custody

Following the town union leadership crisis rocking Nkpor Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State,  Mr. Kingsley Obi has allegedly disappeared under the police custody.
Consequently, Obi's wife, Chika has cried out to Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase demanding that the police should produce her husband without further delay.
Chika who made the demand while speaking to newsmen in her residence at Nkpor, hinted that about five armed policemen from the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Abuja had on January 17, 2016, stormed their Nkpor residence, arrested her husband and whisked him off to Ogidi Police Station where they detained him for three days before taking him to Abuja.
She alleged that during the arrest which took place between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., the policemen who arrived their residence with about six civilians who were indigenes of Nkpor, allegedly stole her phone and snatched her husband's phone before taking him away on handcuffs, in the presence of their children.

300 dead as Fulani herdsmen/Agatu farmers clash

No fewer than 300 persons were reportedly dead after attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Agatu local government area of Benue state .

An indigene revealed that "several communities including Obagaji the local government headquarters where people usually took refuge in the past, have been deserted."
"People are fleeing Agatu in droves and heading towards Ugbokpo in neighboring Apa local government area for fear of being killed by the well armed marauders who have virtually taken over Agatu.
"It is a well coordinated attack on Agatu communities, as I speak with you fighting is still raging, not less than 300 persons have been killed in the last two days and we are still counting, many are missing and we have a huge number of displaced persons without facilities to house them.”

Arrest of suspected armed robbers and recovery of stolen vehicle

At about 1:30 am, Thursday, two suspected armed robbers, Gabriel Samuel 'm' 27 years and Wokeko Samuel 'm' 31 years were arrested along Cheribim Road, GRA, Port Harcourt following a distress call to the effect that they snatched at gun point a black Toyota Corolla with registration number ABM 473 AA. The vehicle was snatched from its owner during the early  hours of the day at Rumuigbo, Port Harcourt.

Two locally made revolver pistols and two rounds of .9mm live ammunition were recovered from them. 

The suspects during questioning confessed to have been members of a four man armed robbery gang that terrorizes Ada George, Eagle Island and Rumuola axis of Port Harcourt.
